When I picked up the previa, the perspective of rebuild vs replace
came to mind. With a blown head gasket, worn SADS couplers and unknown
extent of possible damage to the internal of the motor, I decided to go
all out and rebuild the whole motor.
Since I could not do this at my apartment complex and if you understand the location and the amount of work this motor has, then you know that I would hate to change a head gasket on a high mileage motor and have something break down shortly after and have to go through the process again.
When conversations about the rebuild vs replace come up, I always think like this:
Time, Place, money (knowledge and resources as well).
I dont have place, so I dont have the time.
Knowledge on the previa motor, very low. I have novice mechanic skills, but not well versed.
Resources, I feel I can be resourceful and have a way to get what I need (parts and services). But knowledge and resources can only take you so far if you are not working on the vehicle itself.
Why didn't I go with a replacement motor? It is cheap to pick up a JDM motor. But I don't know what has been done with that motor and most of the places I talked to at the time did not have any paperwork to say how many miles or certificate with good information. And if I did just drop in a JDM motor, whose to say the head gasket won't go out within a few months. These places typically say 1 month warranty or something very little. I've seen JDM SR20DETs and B16s fail off the pallet.
There is also a better sense of knowing what has been done to your motor, especially if you provide all the parts. And again, since the motor is out, you can change many components, which is what I did.

OK I'm gonna poke at ya here... You didn't have the space or the time yet you got it done... hhhmmmm I got a space and some time but NO IDEA on Previa motors or drive trains and I got 2 of these things.
ReplyDeleteHow long did it take you and did you have to sell the kids to pay for it?
I paid a shop, which cost me tons of money. It took a few months due to waiting game of parts, both from me and from the shop (head rebuild).
